Rolly's Innenleben.
A modest name for the player introducing new technology in its segment. Released - and bought in Tokyo (-: - in four colours to the Japanese market on October 21st, the player has the following features:
noise canceling
1 to 4 GB flash storage
colour display
Li-ion battery
neck strap
ships with SonicStage 4.1 CP (native MP3/WMA/AAC/ATRAC3 support)
a FM radio (who will use this anyway, DAB is just around the corner..)
After some weeks of usage, I'm very happy with it. The SonicStage software remains the cumbersome part; importing cover art from the web is still a semi-manual process and for reasons unknown to me, some pics get transferred to the player while others do not.
The internal battery is charged over USB and lasts well a week, with activated noise canceling - Don't expect miracles out of this feature. It's doing a good job to render low frequency background-noise away, yet fails on short mid- to high-frequencies. A plus when commuting by train, plane or listening to music when vacuumcleaning - As the Sony commercial states, every moment has its music...
The design is an eye-catcher for sure, as the display virtually disappears when shut off. If you don't care so much for battery life, you can let some nice coloured dots fly to the rhythm of your music.
Sony is going to intruduce a new Walkman, the NW-S706, with a storage capacity of 4GB soon. The design seems to be based on the old NW-A series with a bit from the NW-S series.
Some highlights:
4GB Flash memory
Quick charge function (as usual)
50 Hours battery life (not so usual)
Line - in recording
Color display
3 colors: Black, Pink, and Purple
If you mix this:
with this:
You get a new Walkman...with a reeeally tiny color screen.
Sony is going official with this new Walkman around the 12th of this month according to an insider (read: some guy on the internet).
Last weekend I attended the "Sony World 2006" in Zurich. Altough there weren't really any new products shown, it was nice to see (and touch) them all in person.
Here are some random pictures of the event...
I am sooo wanting one of these!
The PS3 was there too...but a view through the vent holes have confirmed my belief that this was just an empty case. The real ones (all 10 of it) are probably all in Tokyo at the TGS. Also it showed the same (fantasy) game play shown at E3 2005. Nevertheless, it was nice to see this beauty with my own eyes.
I would need to move into a new appartment to have enough space for this monster. This rear projector has an amazing picture quality, the colors and sharpness are fantastic.
Sony Pictures was there too, promoting the newest James Bond movie "Casino Royal".
You also had the chance to play around with the new Walkman. This could definately be a winner, featuring a very unique shape AND fingernail-matching colors.
The Esprit line is probably the most weird(I am still not sure if I just want to call it garbage) product of Sony since their intruduction of the Mouse Phone (which also could be seen at the show). This TV is -when you're not watching- hiding the screen behind his speakers.
To bring back Sony on track, Howard Stringer (CEO) announced some time ago to cut 10'000 Jobs and slim down Sonys product line. I am not aware which product lines will be ceased, but after reading todays news that Sony has reported better-than-expected quarterly results it seems it will hit Aibo.
So sleep well Aibo, I always wanted you to be my friend. But unfortunately you were more expensive than about 3 real dogs.
If you are intrested in Sonys profit report, check out this Reuters article.
Rumor has it the soon-to-be-released K800i will sport a 3.2 megapixel camera, QVGA display and 512 MB internal memory. Intresting thing is the could-be-real picture of the menu which features an icon looking very similar to a Playstation Portable.
